Business Etiquette in Costa Rica

Costa Ricans are very laid-back and relaxed in their work place and no matter what the occasion; a tie is very rarely worn. Dressing for comfort is the main priority here in this buttoned-up work atmosphere. If coming to Costa Rica for work or a business trip, it is very useful to know the following points:

• Politics are a very popular conversation topic as is family, history and art. Eco-tourism is another popular topic as it is such a large part of Costa Rican lifestyle.

• Men in business always shake hands no matter how many times they have met. Women will pat another woman’s hand very lightly or give each other a peck on the cheek if they are more familiar with each other.

• Expect a lot of woman with high profile jobs. They are a lot of lawyers and very well-educated people here in Costa Rica.

• Business dinners are very popular and spouses are always welcome however never turn up with somebody who is not invited as they are likely to be turned away at the door. When invited to somebody’s home it is always important to take gifts as a thank you. Popular gifts would be flowers, chocolates or a good scotch.

• Expect to dine early and leave shortly after eating. Always offer to help clear dishes as a sign of respect.

• Although nearly everything here is never on time but with meetings it is the reverse. Always turn up to meetings on time and bring all relevant materials like business cards.

• Keeping a small variety of gifts such as company pens and pocket diaries as there will always be an opportunity to give out gifts and is great for advertising.

The Business etiquette is quite westernised but whenever coming to do business with another country, it is very important to understand how they work.
