Golfing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is well known for being one of the worlds most popular eco-tourist destinations and it wouldn’t so popular without its fantastic mix of sport and greenery resulting in some fine examples of excellent golf courses. We take a look at 4 of the country’s most prestige courses that are popular not just amongst the Costa Ricans but also with golfers across the world.

Cariari

Cariari is probably one of the most exclusive courses in Costa Rica. It is a private member only club situated only 15 minutes away from Juan Santamaria International Airport San Jose and they are known for being quite strict on not letting members of the public or tourists onto their course, however it has also been rumored that certain hotels have connections to the course and may well be able to get you a round on there, so there’s no harm in asking your hotel manager!

Costa Rica boasts fantistic courses with views to match


The course used to be a coffee plantation, but was converted to a golf course due to a high desire for a championship course in Costa Rica. The beautiful tree-lined course with rolling fairways now plays host several recognized championships such as the Central and South American Open, the Friendship Tournament and a host of other local tournaments.

Valle del Sol

Valle del Sol is another professional golf course, and is tipped to challenge Cariari in the near future as the best championship golf course in Costa Rica as well as competing to host some of the most prestigious events in Central and South America. The course boasts scenic views and good weather all year round.

The course set in a residential area and designed by well known American architect Tracy May in conjunction with the Club Corporation of America. The course offers modern technical playing conditions that will provide any golfer with a truly unique golfing experience.

Hacienda Pinilla

This par 72, 7,300 yard course is the creation of Mike Young who has also designed courses throughout the south of the US. He designed the course to coincide with the natural contours of the grounds the course is placed on and as well as meeting high golfing standards has also been accredited as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its ecological prowess.

The course boasts a variety of excellent features whilst on a round such as picturesque scenery, the usual citing of local wildlife, well maintained greens and the welcoming El Corral Turn house

Conchal Melia

The Conchal course is a beachside course that takes on a very traditional style of golf course based on 2 lots of 9 hole courses tat both start from the clubhouse to make up the 18 holes. Some of the holes offer fantastic views of the ocean and with the addition of several lagoons and lakes, it adds to the special golfing experience of this course as well as providing outlets for good drainage keeping the course at its driest at the wettest of times.

The course has spacious fairways and a variety of different teeing options combined with the seasonal sea breezes, this course offers a different challenge every time you step foot on to the greens. It can prove to be very challenging at times despite its overall general fantastic playability.
