Carbon Neutrality by 2021!

In perhaps his boldest environmental statement yet, Costa Rican President, Oscar Arias has said that Costa Rica will reach Carbon Neutrality by the year 2021. This means that by reducing green house emissions and increasing the number of trees, which absorb carbon dioxide, Costa Rica will not be adding to the problem that is global warming.

This deadline may be new, but the underlying commitment to the environment and overall battle against global warming has long since been in place. Costa Rica are the first country to announce such plans, and are now likely to b the first to achieve them due to its ever increasing forest cover, dedication to renewable energy production, and the presidents plans to further promote public transport and the use of hybrid cars in the near future. Arias also plans to continue his reforestation drive, which has seen a 10% rise in the amount of land covered by trees in recent times.

All in all it looks very promising for Costa Rica, and maybe some other countries should sit up and take notice and start following their lead in the race against global warming!

Costa Rican Lab to Launch new technology into Space??

At a lab in Liberia, Costa Rica, Franklin Chang is getting closer to making his dream of a plasma powered rocket into reality. This week he successfully powered up the prototype rocket for a full 3 hours, which is a major milestone when the previous record of 2 minutes is taken into account!!

This new rocket would have many uses in space, from power rockets used to repair broken satellites, to powering the international space station, to even powering missions to Mars. The new plasma technology would allow for much quicker and more efficient missions to Mars which is one of the main reasons behind the project.

So what actually is Plasma?? It has been dubbed the 4th state of matter, consisting or electrically charged elements at intensely high temperatures at which no compounds hold, much like the center of the sun. The lab has worked hard and have come up with a way to harness the immense power of Plasma using magnetic fields. All very complicated, but good luck to them!
