Arenal to provide water for Northwest Beaches

This week a project was announced to pipe water all the way from Lake Arenal to the Northwest beach areas such as Tamarindo, some 100 km away. This project is set to cost upwards of $300 million which has been met by dismay by many Costa Ricans. They feel that the money that they pay through taxes is going to be used to send water to an area dominated by foreign investment and tourism developments.

Other people are apposed to the project as it is going to place further demand on an already stretched water supply, which is needed to power the hydro electric plants which are currently struggling to keep up with demand, which has caused rationing and unexpected blackouts.

However these areas are becoming more and more dry as time goes by, and are in desperate need of an improved water system to maintain the booming tourism industry which brings in a significant % of Costa Rica's national income every year. If the plans go ahead a significant number of jobs will be created however.

Keep an eye out here for more news on the project in the future.

Costa Rican Petrol to have 7% Ethanol by 2008

I an effort to reduce contamination produced by hydrocarbons in Gasoline, the Costa Rican National Oil Refinery announced that Petrol here in Costa Rica will contain at least 7% ethanol by the second half of 2008.

The longer term goal is to up the level to between 10% and 15% by 2011 and for diesel customers they plan to develop a fuel containing 2-5% bio diesel obtained from palm oil.

This will not be a cheap process, but will continue the ever increasing efforts of Costa Rica to become the first pollution neutral country in the world. The government are set to promote the cultivation of sugarcane and industrial Cassava in order to produce the necessary ethanol for the project. The introduction of the ethanol will be carried out slowly to enable users to get used to it gradually and to guarantee that there will be enough agricultural product available in order to meet demand.

During the next two weeks, the refinery, which has a monopoly on the refining and distribution of fuels in the country, will be opening bidding on an expansion of its plant to equip it to handle ethanol and bio diesel.
