In the Costa Rican News - Week March 28th - 31st 2006

A Southern Zone International Airport could be coming soon to Costa Rica!!!

The thought of having 3 International Airports in such a small country about the size of Scotland is unthinkable within Central America. However it would appear that the site for the 3rd Costa Rican International airport may have been picked. The new site will be situated in the Osa Peninsula where 6% of the worlds bio diversity lies and where National Geographic and the Discovery Channel spend a lot of their year! The site is said to between towns of Sierpe and Palmar Sur just off the Pan American highway that joins Costa Rica to Nicaragua and Panama.

There are reservations and happiness in the announcement. People are happy as it should bring much prosperity to a poor part of the country in much needed construction jobs, hospitality and airport officials. However the main reservation is that the area will lose its appeal as one of the most bio diverse areas on the planet.

The Southern Zone Development Committee has agreed to provide $1.2 million dollars to the development of the countries 3rd International Airport. The main aim is to increase tourism which is the main source of Costa Rica income, more people now holiday in Costa Rica than most countries in the world and it is easy to see why. There is hope that the Osa Peninsula could become the new Guanacaste however people visit the Osa as they do not want Guanacaste!!

With regards to building the airport, currently the Costa Rican government has not enough money to do this and they are suggesting putting it out to concession. This way a company will build and maintain for a set number of years, splitting the profit with the Government then handing it back to the Government once these years has surpassed. This is very much like the San Jose airport and we have seen how much fuss was made over this!!

Jamiroquai Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica has for such a small country had some very famous visitors and their latest visitor 'Jamiroquai' loved this country so much that in 2005 they stayed in Tambor at a luxury house while writing their much awaited album 'Dynamite'. 1st April saw the first Festival Imperial at which there were many International bands from all over the world playing. Head lining the event was the British funk Jazz band Jamiroquai.

Jamiroquai were set to play at 8pm however in true Costa Rican fashion they jumped onto stage at 10pm playing a 2 hour electric set for the Costa Rican people. Jay K in his usual mirror hat and Mexican poncho leaped around the Costa Rican stage like a jaguar of the Osa peninsula thrilling the audience with every move. The set finished at 12am with their last song being 'deeper underground' from the film Godzilla and the bass of this song must have awoken most of the Central Valley.

2nd April will see Styling headline the event, another big fan of Costa Rica after spending November in a yoga hotel down in the Osa Peninsula.
