Activists turn to Arias!

Activists in Costa Rica have recently turned to Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the dis armer of Costa Rica in their battle to eliminate the use of radio active materials in weapons. This comes as it was publicly disclosed that 3 forms of the radio active material, Uranium was included on the Central American Free Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA). Depleted Uranium is a by product from Nuclear energy production, which is 1.7 times heavier than lead, making it 'ideal' for use in weaponry. It also bursts into flames upon hitting its target, producing extreme temperatures which helps it cut through armour and tanks like a knife through butter. It is also said to have effects on the human body, but exactly what has not been proved, with suggestions that it can damage kidney and liver tissue coming from some places, and the view that it has minimal effect coming from others. It also has a half life of 4.5 billion years, which is how old the earth is believed to be. Meaning that if it is continued to be used in weaponry, areas where wars are taking place are going to become radio active, and if the health fears do turn out to be true, people living here are going to feel the effects of war much longer than before.

Because of all of this, activists are calling for Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias to join them, and lead the fight to ban it from use in Weaponry. They also want it removed from CAFTA as they see no reason why such a harmful material should be bought in to their country, after all Costa Rica is entirely powered by renewable energy sources, so no Nuclear plants are operating, they have no army, and therefore no weapons. It does not seem that there are any good uses for this material, so people want it banned from the country, and if the US continue to use it, Costa Rica will not joint them in the free trade agreement, as they do not want to be a part of the use of such a harmful material.

Costa Rica 4-0 New Zealand

Saturday evening was a great night to be a supporter of Costa Rica's national football team as they demolished New Zealand 4-0 in the friendly between the two nations. The game took place the the Ricardo Saprissa stadium, just north of San Jose, and it didn't take long for the home team to show their dominance.

New Zealand never really looked like they were going to get into the game, and 4-0 was a fair result, and could easily have been more, but for some poor finishing from the Costa Rica forwards. With the 2007 Gold Cup due to kick off in early June, Costa Rica look in good form, and look set to do well in the competition.

The teams in the their group for the first stage are Canada, Guadeloupe, and Haiti, with their first match being played at the Orange bowl in Florida against Canada on the 6th June. Good luck!
