Martin Luther King III Visits Ombudsman's Office

The son of the highly respected leader of the 1960's US civil rights, Martin Luther King III paid a visit to Ombudsman's Office on Thursday. This office is responsible for protecting the ideals of equality and human rights within Costa Rica.

On arrival, King, received a tour of the San Jose based department, before being met by a room for of employees eager to here the words passed down from his father.

King Began by saying, "Any time an organization stands up for human rights, i'm always honored and humbled to be able to dialogue with the organization, that's part of the legacy of my father and mother."

Kings appearance was made even more meaningful, with the coincidence of Costa Rica's Cultures day, where Ticos remember their past. He then said that he would always highly encourage Ticos to use this occasion to avoid forgetting their history and heritage, and to learn from those mistakes made in the past.

King is in San Jose for a two day conference, organized by President Oscar Arias' Foundation for Peace and Human Progress on steps toward Good Governance.

More Protests against CAFTA planned

After having what appeared to be the last word in front of legislators on the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), Foreign Trade Minister Marco Vinicio Ruiz went on to say that President Oscar Arias' goal of having the agreement ratified by December is still feasible. However, opposition legislators say that this is unlikely to happen.

Opposition to the CAFTA are still working hard against it, with Citizen Action Party (PAC) legislator Alberto Salom's attempt to have the CAFTA sent back to day one of debate by the supreme court being rejected.

However, fellow PAC member Elizabeth Fonseca said she will continue making requests for motions, even though a previous 40 motion request have been rejected.

Towards the end of the month, 23rd-24th of October, leaders of Costa Rica's Social Security System (Caja) and Workers Union (UNDECA) have called for a two day crippling anti-CAFTA strike and protest, in order to make clear exactly what impact CAFTA is going to have.
