Costa Rica Mountain Bike Race
Posted by Thomas under: Sport .
The Costa Rican mountain bike race, known as ‘Ruta de los Conquistadores’, is known to be one of the most hardest and enduring challenges that the mountain bike scene has to offer. With riders from across the world participating, you can see them in action from today.
The race is a coast to coast route that’s starts on the west Pacific side on the beach in Jaco, before finishing up in the Caribbean port of Limon. The total race course measures an incredible 350 kilometers long with a total accumulated climb of 12,000 meters.
The event route tries to replicate the route that Spanish conquerors took when they landed on Costa Rica’s shores, from where they made their way from coast to coast, hence the race’s name, ‘Ruta de los Conquistadores’ translated as the Route of the Conquerors.
The race was originally created and thought up by Costa Rican cyclist Roman Urbina. Roman wanted to create an event that would effectively retrace the same steps as the Spanish first took when they arrived between 1540 and 1560.
The race is divided into 3 main sections, Jaco to Ciudad Colon, Tres Rios to Turrialba and Turrialba to Limon. So if you fancy checking out some international mountain bikers enduring one of the toughest courses on the planet, then get yourself out to one of these destination points or get on the route yourself!
