More Indigenous Treasures found in Costa Rica
Posted by Thomas under: General News .
A stone sphere believed to belong to indigenous tribes of Costa Rica has been found near the Osa Peninsula by archaeologists. This is not the first time an ancient artifact like this has been found.
Back in 1993 a similar dig in the same location revealed a very similar stone like grey sphere that measured an approximate 1.1 meters wide. Over the past few decades hundreds of these balls have been found across Costa Rica varying in their size, some no larger than size of a football whilst others shaping up more like a large boulder and weighing in excess of 15 tons.
The spheres, usually made from granodiarite, are not exactly known as to their uses or purposes although many have tried generating theories that range from humorous to scientific to religious.
This latest discovery however signals that the sphere’s uses may be in conjunction with more social aspects of society with spheres being used as symbols of ones prestige or position of power. This would help provide evidence that the indigenous tribe did actually have the capacity to create a complex society and hierarchies.
The spheres are believed to be from the Chiriqui period from 800 to 1500 AD.
