Allegro Poopogayo Costa Rica throws guests out

Posted by richardb under: Travel and Tourism .

blog4681.jpgThe Allegro Papagayo’s recent news that it will have to close its doors due to the illegal dumping of waste water into the local estuary came with even more more surprise as guests were told that they would just be refunded their money back.  Arriving guests in the coming week found that they had had their reservations canceled and money refunded but had no where to go.You would think that the least that the Allegro Papagayo could do is upgrade them to their 5 star resort just across the bay at the Grand Papagayo, however legally the hotel does not have to do anything apart from refund their money.  This lack of care for its clients has left many people with a sour taste in their mouth.  This is not the way to do business and especially not in Costa Rica.  Everyone knows that what comes around goes around.  In this case it smells very rotten and is ill managed.

You have to feel sorry for the guest that had been waiting for months for his sunny vacation to Costa Rica to find out that a week before arrival he had been refunded his hotel stay and told to find somewhere else to stay.  Clients of some agencies are being swapped to other hotels, however this time of year is very busy and there is not a huge variety of hotels with space.  People who booked not through an  agency are left on their own and are trying to find space where ever they can so that their vacation is not totally destroyed.

Maybe one needs to think twice about booking a Occidental hotel stay in Costa Rica after their response to this disaster.

According to this week’s Tico Times (www.ticotimes.net/topstory.htm), the Grand is open but under investigation for allegedly dumping raw sewage right into the ocean. Hmmmm… perhaps consider a different resort, there are a dozen in the area. Or Altos de Eros, that place is sweet.

My families vacation in Costa Rica this coming Saturday at the AP has just been shifted by Air Canada to the Grand. I got the email an hour ago. I hope they don’t close that one as well but there are reports that it too is now under investigation … we’ll see how well the GP handles this all (both the influx of misplaced guests and the environmental investigation). Fingers crossed.

We have just returned from Liberia, Costa Rica but we stayed at El Nakuti resort which is located across the bay from Allegro Papagayo. I heard some horror stories from travelers that stayed at Papagayo and were moved to our resort where they went on a day trip, came back to the hotel and they were told the resort has closed. Officials gave them ½ hour to vacate their rooms and get back on the bus to be moved to other resorts. From my understanding, travelers were accommodated with rooms through other resorts in the area not just Grand Papagayo. During my stay at my resort, there were numerous travelers moved to El Nakuti which complained to their travel agencies since this resort, even though is rated as 3 ½ start by Sunwing is anything but. If traveling to Allegro, I would ask for my money back and make alternate resort accommodations so that you don’t get downgraded rather then upgraded when you get there. If you get accommodations at an alternate resort, make sure you get equal or better accommodations since there are quite a few upscale resorts in the area. Do your research before you accept alternate arrangements, and if it would be me, I would not accept a move to El Nakuti, if you get moved there. Go to trip advisory website and read reviews and you will see I am not exaggerating. Also note that I am not just going by what I read or heard, my husband and I have stayed at Allegro back in 2004 so I know what it offers vs that of El Nakuti where we stayed now. Also note that I did not just meet one couple moved to our resort but lots of travelers. This was also confirmed by the guide which took us for a ride on sea-doo to the Allegro resort on Sunday, Feb 17th when he was showing us the resorts around the bay. Good luck to anyone who needs to make alternate arrangements and may your vacation be stress free.

Wow. I was just at The Occidental from Feb 8-15th and had a wonderful time. I heard about the sewage problem though. I feel sorry for the hourly workers who need those jobs to survive.

I would book it elsewhere. Why on earth support this company - they were doing it for a year or more!!! And, they knew what they were doing. Save your money and your time. Head to Montezuma for clean beaches and the best time ever. We stayed at Ylang Ylang and I want to return every moment of the day
