New Highway to Be Built in Costa Rica
Posted by Paul Smith under: Travel and Tourism .
It currently takes approximately 8 hours to travel between two of Costa Rica’s popular province destinations for tourists, Guanacaste on the Pacific coast and Limon on the Caribbean coast, but that time may be quite significantly as the Transport Ministry has announced plans of a new road.
The new highway will be approximately 27 kilometers long that would effectively connect the towns of San Carlos, Upala and Sarapiqui as well as cutting the drive time down to approximately 2 hours as currently the easiest way to access one side to another is by going via San Jose.
The highway which will be called Tapon de Chilamate will begin its construction next year in 2009 at a cost of ¢30 billion (£30 million) which will primarily be financed by the Corporación Andina de Fomento (Andean Development Corporation).
Although plans have been made and contracts drawn up, the announcement of the new highway will undoubtedly face fierce critiscm from green and environmentalist groups who will oppose the idea.
