Costa Rica Connecting Up to a Faster World

Posted by Thomas under: General News .

blog544.jpgTelecommunications in Costa Rica received a further boost today as it was announced that the telecommunication state-run monopoly, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), would be hooking up to a third undersea data cable increasing the internet bandwidth in the small Central American nation.

Costa Rica networks currently connect to the rest of the world as they are connected to the telecommunications global network via two data cables that are already in place. These two cables both run under water, embedded in the waters in the Caribbean, as the cables connect to the eastern side of Costa Rica.

The new connection will reach Costa Rica on shore at Esterollis de Parrita in the Puntarenas province, joining up with the current cable that runs from Los Angeles in the United States all the way down the Pacific Ocean to Panama. New facilities are also being built in Esterollis de Parrita to accommodate for the new global connection.

The project which is costing ICE around $35 million is mainly being put in place to help increase the bandwidth and speed of the current connections in Costa Rica to the outside world. With Costa Rica becoming more globally recognized there has been a clear increase in the amount of internet usage by both social and business sectors.

Once in place, higher bandwidth and faster downloading times will be available for internet users as well as internet becoming available in places across Costa Rica where it has never been available. Places where currently only dial-up connections can be used could be changing to faster broadband networks.

The project which was announced nearly 2 years ago back in 2006 was due for completion late last year, however the new projections have said that completion will be around July this year and that the work is on time.

Whether ICE deliver this on time or not remains to be seen, and even then once the project has been completed, ICE will have to sort out their own internal connections to provide the better connections, packages and services not to mention help develop the areas of Costa Rica that are currently ‘offline’.

The outlook however does remain good as ICE have already announced their plans to increase their broadband users by the end of the year, more here. This is a great step for Costa Rica with faster and more available internet coming to the country.
