The Dry Wet Season 2009 in Costa Rica
Posted by richardb under: Travel and Tourism .
If you are currently living in Costa Rica or are about to visit during the months of September or October, typically you will expect heavy rains in the afternoons where the roads turn to rivers and there a land slides throughout the mountains. However this year has to be the biggest upset to the normal weather pattern with San Jose receiving less than 50% rain days in September so far.
The lack of rain is great news for the tourism industry which has suffered severely this year with the global financial crisis and the high unemployment rates world wide. Costa Rican Hotels throughout have offered huge discounts and incentives for clients to travel, however the clients that took advantage of the low seasons rates in Sept/Oct have been surprised to see great weather. A visitor to Guanacaste stated ‘ I cannot believe how much sun I have seen during the wet season in Costa Rica, I was expecting not too see sun in afternoons, this I fabulous’.
Even though the weather is fabulous at the moment we may here locals crying for rain in the dry season as people could be seeing any of the below:
1) Water shortages throughout the country, especially in places such as Guanacaste which is one of the driest parts of the country.
2) Electrical shortages. In 2007 Costa Rica saw black outs throughout the country as water shortages were at an all time low and Costa Rica depends on the water for its hydro electric plants. Currently Lake Arenal which supplies a vast majority of Costa Rica’s water is at a decent level however it always receives a large bulk of its water during Sept/Oct.
3) The rains could come later in the year pushing into Nov/Dec and affecting people’s vacations in the dry season.
Whatever the outcome is, Costa Ricans are enjoying the sun at the moment however praying we do not pay for it later.
