China’s Gift to Costa Rica Police Force comes without spares
Posted by richardb under: Economy & Politics .
If you walk around San Jose you will see a new brand of Police Cars on the street and also some big smiling policemen. The reason for this is because China donated a bunch of Police Cars as part o their Free Trade Agreement with Costa Rica back in 2008.
Costa Rica received funding, a new national football stadium and around 200 new police cars (as pictured to the right). However we are all still unaware of what China got back in return? People are asking whether it was shark fins? Oil drilling rights?
Anyway not even 1 year after the introduction of these new cars, the cars are starting to fall to apart or have been involved in accidents and cannot be repaired. They cannot be repaired, why is that I hear you say?
The cars are a Chinese model that most people have not heard of and there i nobody in Costa Rica that can provide spare parts. That sounds ridiculous I hear you say?
Imagine being the policeman that now has to walk everywhere instead of driving his nice shiny broken down car. This is some incredible short sightedness of either the Costa Rican government or maybe China will give the spare parts at a high price, this way they will for sure make their money back on the cars.
Here is hoping the National Stadium will stay together better than the Police Cars!
