The health Ministry of Costa Rica today gave final approval to the Limon Festivals on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. The festivals willl begin today and continue on until October 18th.
Maria Luisa Avila, senior official of the ministry, stated that Limon had been given the final approval as there is not a high risk of flu AH1N1 (Swine Flu), or dengue fever. She said it would also take a lot more than te flu to stop the Limonese people and their festivals.
In addition, organizers of the festival had met the required health standards (use of water and solid waste treatment, for example). In previous years the fetsivals had been suspended due to trash problems and the threat of Dengue from this.
In the Caribbean province of Limon there has been less than 60 cases of people infected with swine flu, a low figure, according to the Minister.
The cases of Dengue this year in Limon dropped by 78% compared with the number of patients reported last year in that province.
Avila said the only risk is to appear would be serotype 3 dengue, which currently circulates in Panama and Nicaragua. However, the health ministry has maximized border controls to detect suspected cases.
Despite the approval granted to the carnivals, Avila asked people with symptoms associated with influenza AH1N1 not to attend the festivals.
