The volcano itself is actually located next to the town of La Fortuna and sits 1,633m tall. Arenal Volcano is known to be one of the most constantly active volcano’s in the world, giving visitors some spectacular viewing. After being dormant for more than 400 years, it erupted in 1968 and has been constantly active ever since. It is very safe to visit, with designated observation point that allows you to see lava from a safe distance. Surrounding the volcano lays a lush rainforest reserve called the Arenal Conservation Area, in which visitors can enjoy an observation hike to the vantage points surrounding the volcano. This reserve is home to more than 3,450 species of animal, bird and insect. |

At the foot of Arenal Volcano lies the man made Lake Arenal which is used as a source of power, through hydro-electricity. Costa Rica is 100% dependant on renewable sources of energy such as this, as it helps to retain their label of eco-tourism and provide the local people of Costa Rica their own cheap electricity. In this area be sure to take advantage of the pristine natural surroundings! |
