Birding Capitals of Costa Rica

From £4,499.00 per person

14 Days

Tailored for the true twitcher, this Costa Rica holiday package takes you to the major birding hotspots of this tropical paradise: Heredia, Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota, and the Osa Peninsula.

Upon arrival at the airport in San Jose, we’ll meet you off the plane and guide you through customs and immigration. We’ll then take you to a gorgeous coffee plantation overlooking the Central Valley called Finca Rosa Blanca.

Your three nights here will introduce you to the birdwatching splendour that is Costa Rica.

Our birding expert and naturalist guide will walk you through the grounds of Finca Rosa Blanca. They’ve recorded over 130 species of birds here, including hawks, blue grosbeaks, and buff-throated saltators.

This coffee plantation and surrounding forests are ideal for birdwatcher of all levels.

After Finca Rosa Blanca we’ll drive you up into the cloud forests of Monteverde, where you’ll stay at the Hotel Senda for three nights. Here, you’ll explore both the Santa Elena and Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserves, home of a myriad of bird species.

Once you’ve experienced Monteverde, it’s time to head south into the most mountainous part of Costa Rica.

You’ll stay at the Savegre Lodge in San Gerardo de Dota for three nights, an area famous for the resplendent quetzal. Most people end up seeing one or two of these magnificent birds.

Other species here are the yellow-thighed finch, collared redstart, yellow-winged vireo, sooty-capped bush-tanager, silver-throated tanager, flame-coloured tanager, and slaty flowerpiercer.

From the Savegre Lodge, you’ll head further south to stay at Lapa Rios Eco Lodge for four nights in the Osa Peninsula.

This area of Costa Rica holds three percent of the world’s biodiversity. At Lapa Rios, you’ll stay in an open-air bungalow to fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the rainforest.

While at Lapa Rios you’ll enjoy tours to view birds like the red-legged honeycreeper, Black-cheeked ant tanager, yellow-billed cotinga, Rufous-winged woodpecker, and more.

Finally, we’ll fly you back to San Jose for your last night at Finca Rosa Blanca before going home.

You’ll have time to see any species you missed before and enjoy some amazing coffee from the plantation.

I've lived in Costa Rica for over 7 years with my Costa Rican wife and 2 children.  I have travelled all over Costa Rica, stayed in the hotels, done the tours and drunk the coffee.
